About the event
Appetizer (30 mins) - Introduction to New Words & Phrases
We will start with an ice breaker to see how students familiarize themselves with Chinese architecture. Then, we will learn the keywords and phrases related to describing location and representation. For example, "方位词 (fāngwèicí) - directional words," "代表 (dàibiǎo) - represents," "有...的历史了 (yǒu...de lìshǐ le) - has a history of..."
Main Course (30 mins) - Now, Let’s Practice
We will have a video tour of the Wufeng Lin Family Mansion in Taiwan. It will be divided into various segments, each focusing on architectural elements. After that, we will have discussions on the observations and cultural significance of the elements. Each student is encouraged to use the newly acquired vocabulary to describe the location and representation of each architectural feature.
Dessert (30 mins) - Open Discussions
In this part, students can provide examples of how architecture in their culture uses symbolism to convey meaning. We will also discuss any parallels between Chinese architectural symbolism and their own cultural background.
