About the Event
Appetizer (30 mins) - Introduction to New Words & Phrases
The new words & phrases you will learn:
- 博物馆 (bówùguǎn) - museum
- 美术馆 (měishùguǎn) - art gallery
- 艺术品 (yìshùpǐn) - artwork
- 时期 (shíqī) - period
- 象征 (xiàngzhēng) - symbol
The sentence structure used to talk about your experience:
- Focus on using the past tense marker "了" (le) to indicate completed actions
- Practice the pattern "是...的" (shì...de) to emphasize details about past experiences
Students are encouraged to share their own experiences visiting museums or art galleries. They will use the newly introduced vocabulary to describe what they saw and the periods or symbols associated with different artworks.
Main Course (30 mins) - Now, Let's Practice
Students will learn about the cultural interpretation of artworks in the China Gallery at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). This session aims to enhance understanding of the historical and symbolic significance of selected Chinese artifacts.
Dessert (30 mins) - Open Discussions
Let's discuss:
- How might cultural context affect the interpretation of Chinese artworks?
- Are there elements that Western viewers might interpret differently from Eastern viewers?
- What relevance do ancient Chinese artworks have in today's global society?
